Buying an 'as-is' house...or what the heck were we thinking?

I saw the house exactly one time before we moved in. Because this was a long distance move, and I was so busy wrapping things up in Texas, I missed the chance to participate in the inspections or even do a final walk-through prior to closing.
The house was being sold pretty much as-is...there was no seller's disclosure, no information about repairs or updates or anything. When I walked through it the first time, it looked like the lady had packed whatever would fit in her car and left...there was close in the closets, soap in the shower, dirty dishes in the sink...I didn't open it, but I would have guessed there was food in refrigerator. Some things don't need to be seen.
Because of the hoarding, there were lots of spaces I didn't really have a chance to look at very closely. Oh well. We're moving across the country! A new house! New jobs! New people! How bad could it possibly be?
After two days of driving with the dogs in the car, I arrived! The house had been cleared out as part of the closing agreement, but that doesn't mean there wasn't plenty to see. At that time, I wasn't thinking of creating this blog, so please excuse the photos...it will get better! Hopefully. I think.
Did I remember that EVERY room in the house was carpeted? Including the kitchen and bathroom?
Nope.

Did I realize that one of the upstairs closets had carpeting up the walls?
Nope. Who even does that? It's important to note here that the carpet on the walls is not found anywhere else in the house.

And this wallpaper and these curtains? I had totally blocked that out.

And this garden shed?

Yeah, it really is an outhouse. I guess that might come in handy, you know, in case of some sort of plumbing emergency.
And that's just the start. The curtains are pretty much gone, but the wallpaper and carpeting are still here. I felt a little bit like Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind when I took down those green curtains!
The outhouse is now being used as a garden shed. The carpeted closet? We've left that alone too. Given the years of neglect, we're going to start with some other things first!
